Day of Triumph for Crossing All Bridges
March 19, 2012
Imagine a place that opens new worlds to people who are stifled in a safe, but perhaps boring, cocoon. It's a place that provides friends for the friendless and gives meaning to long hours of sameness. It's a place that serves up knowledge for hungry minds and skills for eager fingers. There's no need to imagine such a place, for it exists in Brantford. Crossing All Bridges is a little-known, underfunded place of mini-miracles that's blossoming despite the challenges it faces.
Valerie's Story Tells the Tale
March 17, 2012
There are as many wonderful stories at Crossing All Bridges as there are clients. Here's a bit of the story of Valerie Hunt, who had Down syndrome and died in 2009, as told by her brother, stilt-walker Doug Hunt: "My sister Valerie was one of the first participants here. I had to drag her out of my mom's grasp because Valerie and mom were a team and they were always together. After dad passed away, Valerie was mom's saviour because they did everything together whether going to Tim Hortons or going shopping. I heard about this new program in town and thought 'We gotta get Valerie into it' but mom was a little apprehensive. I mean, when Valerie was little mom wouldn't let her go to day camp alone."
